Sensing Success: Three Integral Roles Sensors Play in EV Technology

As the buzz around electric and autonomous vehicles continues to take the world by storm, the need for advanced technology has become a major topic of conversation. At the forefront of these technologies are sensors, so much so that the global electric vehicle sensor market surpassed 9.6 billion USD in 2021 and is projected to have a 15.1% CAGR from 2022 to 2030 [1]

Among that market, passenger vehicles own the majority share driven by the demand for safer vehicles and consumer’s purchasing power[2]. Sensors are crucial for the basic and advanced functions of these electric, autonomous and even unmanned vehicles as they measure essential data including light detection (LiDAR), distance (ultrasonic & radar), position, and cameras.

Three of the most important roles sensors play in the EV and autonomous markets are enhancing safety, boosting performance, and increasing efficiency.

Enhancing Safety

Safety is a major concern when it comes to designing electric and autonomous vehicles and sensors allow design engineers to incorporate important safety features. For instance, collision avoidance systems equipped with speed and position sensors can detect potential hazards and prevent accidents. Position Sensors account for 10% of grains through 2030, due to increased need for monitoring and safety systems[3]

Another concern to consider is the detection of thermal runaway events in lithium-ion batteries. Battery safety sensors can either detect particulate matter such as smoke or pressure changes in lithium-ion battery packs. The battery safety aerosol sensors use the principle of light scattering to detect the presence of aerosol, while the battery safety pressure sensors use MEMs (Micro-Electromechanical System) and ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) technologies to detect transient pressure changes. 

Both sensors reduce the risk of potentially severe accidents and ensure compliance with international regulations.

Boost Performance & Efficiency

Sensors can also help improve the performance of an electric vehicle. High performing

vehicles require a high performing battery system, and a high performing battery system requires an extremely accurate sensor. These current sensors utilize an advanced closed loop method that facilitates cost effective current sensing with a fast response time and highly accurate results. Other applications include current leakage detection and fault isolation in battery charging systems, current measurement in energy storage systems, and fault detection in industrial equipment.

Paves the Way for the Future

Sensor technology is constantly advancing. The more accurate these sensors become, the more possibility for fully autonomous and unmanned applications. Sensors are undeniably linked to the advancement of  EV technology because they provide the necessary data to understand the environment the vehicle is in.

For example LiDAR sensors use laser beams to create high-resolution 3D maps of the vehicle's surroundings. While radar sensors are used to measure the distance and speed of objects surrounding the vehicle. The data collected by these sensors enable autonomous vehicles to understand the environment, make split-second decisions, and navigate safety in today’s world.
